Gorges de Regalon
abbaye cruis

This is a classic gorges in the Petit Luberon area, signed off the main D973 Pertuis – Cavaillon road 3.5km west of the village of Merindol. There is plenty of organized parking, it can get very busy there, particularly Spring Sundays.

The gorges itself  is easily accessed, there are a few scrambles needed . There are supposedly the narrowest in Europe, and one can easily imagine stone age man camped out there, feeling very snug and cosy.

One can simply go up the gorges and then retrace your tracks which takes about 1-1 ½ hours, or there is a choice of two marked routes at the top end of the gorges of about 3 and five hours apiece.

The gorges itself is very shaded in the summer, but the approaches and the circuits outside them can be very hot. Water, hat, suncream and an early start are recommended .

Other visits possible in the area:
Apt : main market day Saturday. Very pleasant pedestrian centre to wander through. Speciality candied fruit .

Loumarin : pretty village nearby, nice place for lunch. Tends to be a bit trendy and pricey. Does have a nice field in front of the castle to picnic in.

Colorado de Rustrelle: The ochre mines, absolutely beautiful.

Canyon d’Oppedette: infact another gorges, with a walk around its edges looking down into the canyon. It has a little bar and bistro de pays in the village.
Do not leave valuables in sight in your locked car.

There are infact no end of pretty “perched villages” in the area and you would be spoilt for choice.
